Fasting

Isaiah 58 -Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

True Fasting

“Cry out loudly, don’t hold back!
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Tell My people their transgression
and the house of Jacob their sins.

They seek Me day after day
and delight to know My ways,
like a nation that does what is right
and does not abandon the justice of their God.
They ask Me for righteous judgments;
they delight in the nearness of God.”

“Why have we fasted, but You have not seen?
We have denied ourselves, but You haven’t noticed!”
“Look, you do as you please on the day of your fast,
and oppress all your workers.
You fast with contention and strife
to strike viciously with your fist.
You cannot fast as you do today,
hoping to make your voice heard on high.
Will the fast I choose be like this:
A day for a person to deny himself,
to bow his head like a reed,
and to spread out sackcloth and ashes?
Will you call this a fast
and a day acceptable to the Lord?
Isn’t the fast I choose:
To break the chains of wickedness,
to untie the ropes of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free,
and to tear off every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
to bring the poor and homeless into your house,
to clothe the naked when you see him,
and not to ignore your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will appear like the dawn,
and your recovery will come quickly.
Your righteousness will go before you,
and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.
At that time, when you call, the Lord will answer;
when you cry out, He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you get rid of the yoke among you,
the finger-pointing and malicious speaking,
10  and if you offer yourself to the hungry,
and satisfy the afflicted one,
then your light will shine in the darkness,
and your night will be like noonday.
11  The Lord will always lead you,
satisfy you in a parched land,
and strengthen your bones.
You will be like a watered garden
and like a spring whose waters never run dry.
12  Some of you will rebuild the ancient ruins;
you will restore the foundations laid long ago;
you will be called the repairer of broken walls,
the restorer of streets where people live.

13  “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath,
from doing whatever you want on My holy day;
if you call the Sabbath a delight,
and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
seeking your own pleasure, or talking too much;
14  then you will delight yourself in the Lord,
and I will make you ride over the heights of the land,
and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

The fasting he seems to be not liking is the MOURNING, focusing on self..   afflicting our own soul.  The fast God seems to be liking is the giving to OTHERS from ourselves.. not worrying about ourselves

and not to make our voice heard..

Also, in Isaiah 57 it speaks of preparing the way.. removing obstacles. this is the message John the Baptist had and it alludes to the Messiah.

The Kind of Fast G‑d Wants

G‑d now sends Isaiah to rebuke the Jewish people for their insincere fasting, for going through the motions, while remaining wicked.

Is this the kind of fast I desire?!"11 Rather, the prophet continues, "This is the fast I desire, loosen the bonds of wickedness, unlock the fetters of injustice, set the oppressed free, and break every yoke. You should divide your bread among the hungry, and bring the moaning poor into your house; when you see a naked person, you should clothe him, and don't ignore your own kin."12

 He continues to say that if we do this, we will be successful, and when we call out to Him, He will answer. If we stop the oppression of the poor, the pointing-finger and the corrupt speech and open our hearts to the hungry and satiate the afflicted, our light will shine in the darkness. The deepest darkness will then be as bright as the morning. G‑d will always guide you, satisfy your needs in times of drought, and strengthen your bones. You will become like a well watered garden, like a spring whose water never ceases. Our ruins will be rebuilt, and our foundations reestablished.

Judges 20:26

26 The whole Israelite army went to Bethel where they wept and sat before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

In context -
In Judges chapter 19, a Levite purchased a concubine frm Bethlehem. On his way back, he stopped in Gibeah, in Benjamin. In this town was a re-enactment of Sodom and Gomorrah with the ending being that they raped his concubine so that she fell to the ground and died as she came back to the house they were staying in. This levite then cut her body into 12 pieces and sent it to the 12 tribes of Israel. And they were so outraged and distraught over this that they called out to the Lord. Part of this was fasting.. hoping the Lord would hear them and provide them with an answer .. if they should go out against the tribe of Benjamin  in Gibeah.

1 Samuel 7:6

6 When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence. They fasted that day, and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

In context - When Israel was battling the Philistines and losing (1 Sam 4), they decided to take the Ark of God with them to save them from the Philistines. Even though the Philistines were horrified that the "Gods" were in the camp and that these were the same "gods" that slaughtered the Egyptians in the wilderness, the Philistines badly defeated Israel and captured the ark of God and the high priests two sons died. When the high priest heard of all this, he died on the spot. In every city the ark was kept, God afflicted the people with tumors (or maybe hemorrhoids). They decided to send the ark back to israel with a restitution offering to end the plague. They had two milk cows take it back, which it did. The cows took it to Beth Shemesh. But some men looked inside the ark and God struck down 70 men. So they sent messengers to have someone come get it.  So it was taken then to Abinadab's house and his son Eleazar was consecrated to take care of it.  It was there 20 years.

Samual told them, if they were turning to the Lord with their whole heart, then the Lord would deliver them from the Philistines.  They fasted and confessed that day at Mizpah.
