John the Baptist

Old Testament

Look, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome Day of the Lord comes. [a]And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land[b] with a curse.”

Robert Breaker:

Is John the Baptist Really Elijah the Prophet?

Jesus says John the Baptist is the Elijah that was to come, twice

In Praise of John the Baptist

11 When Jesus had finished giving orders to His 12 disciples, He moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns. When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent a message by his disciples and asked Him, “Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: the blind see, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed,[a] the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news. And if anyone is not offended because of Me, he is blessed.”

As these men went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear soft clothes are in kings’ palaces. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet. 10 This is the one it is written about:

Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You;[b]
he will prepare Your way before You.[c]

11 “I assure you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,[d] but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence,[e] and the violent have been seizing it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John; 14 if you’re willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.

The Transfiguration

17 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transformed[a] in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here! If You want, I will make[b] three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered[c] them, and a voice from the cloud said:

This is My beloved Son.
I take delight in Him.
Listen to Him!

When the disciples heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified.

Then Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” When they looked up they saw no one except Him[d]—Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised[e] from the dead.”

10 So the disciples questioned Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 “Elijah is coming[f] and will restore everything,” He replied.[g] 12 “But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”[h] 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.

In the spirit and power of Elijah

13 But the angel said to him:

Do not be afraid, Zechariah,
because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you will name him John.
14 There will be joy and delight for you,
and many will rejoice at his birth.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord
and will never drink wine or beer.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit
while still in his mother’s womb.
16 He will turn many of the sons of Israel
to the Lord their God.
17 And he will go before Him
in the spirit and power of Elijah,
to turn the hearts of fathers
to their children,
and the disobedient
to the understanding of the righteous,
to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.

Robert Breaker says Jesus had to come as a lamb and be slain.  He said that the kingdom was offered to the Jews and if they received it, then He would be king.   but in Acts 7 they rejected him.  In Acts 7:55, it says Jesus was standing on the right hand of God in heaven.  Jesus could have returned right there and setup his Milennial kingdom.   But they rejected him.  God had it already planned out to set up the church age.  This was an OT Mystery, the gospel.  That is why God called Paul and setup the kingdom thru Paul.

The Birth of John

Gabriel predicted John's Birth

Luke Chapter 1

Luke 1:5-

John's father, Zechariah - a priest of Abijah's division,
John's mom, Elizabeth - daughter of Aaron

Both his parents were righteous in God's sight living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.

both old and barren

Zechariah served at temple sanctuary and burn incense at the hour of incense -
an angel appeared to him and was standing at the right of the alter of incense''

named john
joy and delight for them
many rejoice at his birth
great in the sight of the lord
never drink wine or beer
filled with the holy spirit while in the womb
turn many ewish to the Lord their God
he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah
to turn the hearts of fathers to children
and the disobediant to the understanding of the righteous
to make ready for the lord a prepared people

to be fulfilled in their proper time

vs 15 said John was to be filled by the holy spirit while in the womb

filled with

this one shows other versions of the bible, but is not formatted well.

this one is pretty good, but i still like the blue letter bible better

Thayer's
  1. to fill
  2. to be fulfilled, to be filled

Strong's

A prolonged form of a primary word πλέω pleō (which appears only as an alternate in certain tenses and in the reduplicated form of πίμπλημι pimplēmi to “fill” (literally or figuratively [imbueinfluencesupply]); specifically to fulfil (time): - accomplish, full (. . . come), furnish.

Mounce's

to fill; (pass.) to be filled, completed

This word was only used in the gospels and Acts.

This is the same word used when
  • Elizabeth speaks as Mary comes to visit her.
  • John is born and Zechariah prophesied
but it is also used to described when
  • Zechariah's time was completed at the temple during the time he was serving and saw the angel
  • Elizabeth's time was to give birth, so her "full time" was completed, fulfilled.
  • when 8 days were accomplished after Jesus birth and it was time to have him circumcized
  • when Mary's purification was accomplished and they presented Jesus to the Lord
This same word was used when the disciples were catching fish and the boat was so filled with fish that they needed the help of the other disciples, and both ships were so filled that they began ti sink

When elizabeth was 6 months pregnant, Gabriel then went to Nazareth in Galilee to Mary and told her she was going to conceive by the holy spirit and give birth to the Messiah

According to Luke 1:36, Elizabeth was in her 6th month.
in v 39, it says Mary ran to see Elizabeth
and elizabeth lived in a town in the hill country of Judah.
John was in Elizabeth's belly and leapt when Mary greeted Elizabeth

So JOHN as a baby in the womb, was filled already with the holy spirit and leapt at the sound of the mother of the Lord's voice.

Elizabeth then began to spoke as she was filled with the holy spirit

in v 56 it says Mary stayed with her about 3 months.. which is until John was born

8th day circumcision, and official naming.  When Zechariah confirmed to naming him John, his tongue was loosed and he was filled by the Holy Spirit and he prophesied.

When Zechariah prophesies, he speaks first about the Messiah and then about John being the propehet of the most High (vs 76) going before the Lord to prepare His ways and give people knowledge of salvation through forgiveness

As we know, 6 months later Jesus was born
Matthew 1 and 2

The early days of John the baptist

vs John grew up and became spiritually strong, he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

John's ministry begins

A voice of one crying in the wilderness

In Luke 3

John went into all the vicinity of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sinss as was written in Isa 40:3-5

John warned some in the crowd to not assume they were safe just because they were the children of Abraham, but their heart and actions must match their repentance.  In Matthew 3, it expounded on this and indicated it as the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of baptism.  It was them he called "Brook of Vipers" and warned about producing fruit consistent with repentnce.

Many asked John for guidance on what to do.   This guidance included sharing and honesty, reliance on God.

Here again many thought John might be the messiah, but John said the messiah is coming.

In John 1,

it says that John was sent from God to be a witness to testify about the light
when the preists and levites asked who he was he said, he is not:
  1. the Messiah
  2. Elijah
  3. the Prophet
But he is the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, prophesied by Isaiah the prophet

He said he was a fulfillment of what Isaiah the prophet said
Isaiah 40:3-5 (700 BC)
Malachi 3:1 - 430 BC
Malachi 4:5 430 BC

Mark 1

the first few verses repeat isaiah's prophesy about the voice crying out in the wilderness.
It speaks about john baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgivenss of sins.

John was described as living in the wilderness, wearing a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waiist and that he ate locusts and wild honey.

Matthew 3

John's message:  Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.
it mentions that people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were flocking to him to be baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

Jesus' Baptism and Temptation

Mark 1

It then moves into Jesus' Baptism and subsequent temptation in the wilderness.

In John 1:

It speaks of John coming as a testimony to the light
And John discusses who he is and who he is not
The next day he pointed out the lamb of god and said he said:
  • he watched the spirit descending like a dove on him and resting on him
  • he said he didn't know him but was told that the ONE would be the one the spirit descended on and rested on is the one who baptizes with the holy spirit

the next day, he pointed out the lamb of god again and Andrew and another followed, but Andrew went and got Peter first.

When Andrew went to get Peter, he told him that they found the messiah.  They followed him to where he was staying and they stayed with him that day.

this is the last it speaks about John for a bit

Matthew 3, 4

Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized.  John tried to stop him ... "I need to be baptized by you".   Jesus told him to "Allow it for now because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness."

My Notes and revelations from the Holy Spirit:  The Melchizedek priesthood is one where he rules and reigns as both king and priest.  Notice, John is fully priest interceding for others to God and leading them to God.  Both his parents are of the line of Aaron and are blameless walking before God.  But since John's family is related to Mary... Jesus is also a preist.  But because Jesus is in the Davidic line, Jesus is also a King.   This is the same way that we are to be.  To have the authority of King and the heart of the intercessor preist, lifting up their people to God and pointing the way.

John's Arrest, Jesus to Galilee

Mark 1

But then it mentions that After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee preaching the gospel....

In Luke 3

Herod locked up John in prison for speaking out against him and his carnal actions of having his brother's wife.  Herod is a jew, and is bound by the jewish law.

Matthew 4

When he heard John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee.  He left Nazareth behind and went to Capernaum.

this is important...
Jesus now says "Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near".  This was John's message.  But John's message was that the kingdom of Heaven was coming.. or is coming... and now Jesus said it has come near... it is here now

John 2

It said the next day he decided to leave for Galilee and found Philip, who brought Nathaniel.

Jesus went to Galilee

Calling Disciples

Matthew 4, Mark 1, Luke 5

At the Sea of Galilee (Lake Gennesaret), Jesus calls Peter and Andrew to follow him.
and then James and John also.

In Matthew and Mark it says that James and John were mending their nets, and in Luke 5 it speaks of them having such a big catch of fish after listening to Jesus that the boats began to sink and the nets were tearing.

Driving out an unclean spirit

Mark 1

Caparnaum, synagogue on the Sabbath.
Peter and Andrew's house.  Healed Peter's mother in law.
The whole town assembled at their doow.

My thoughts:
I am reminded of Sodom and Gomorrah... all the people assembled at the door of Lot for wickedness.  On the flipside ehre, all the town assembled at Peter's door for light.

Jesus prays in a secluded place

Mark 1

Very early in the morning, while still dark, jesus went to a deserted place and prayed.  Peter and others, searched for him and told him they were all looking for him.  Jesus said they needed to preach in the other villages of Galilee too.

Jesus Ministry in all of Galilee

Matthew 4, Mark 1

Then it speaks of Jesus going all over Galilee, teaching, preaching healing.  The news spread to Syria and they were bringing the sick to him.  Large crowds followed him from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

Wedding in Cana of Galilee

John 2

3rd day -

Wedding - Consummation
3rd day... birth
6 stone jars - purification - 6 number of man, flesh.  Each contained 20-30 gallons.   6*20 = 120, 6*30 = 180..

filled with water.. water/word...
water turned to wine.. the new wine, new winskins

When Mary tells him about the wine being gone... he says:

What has this concern to do with me, woman...  My hour has not yet come...

why did she tell him, i believe it was so that he would fix the problem.  Because God is concerned with every inch of our life.  He wants to be in every inch of our lives...

but why did he need to tell her that his hour has not yet come....

After this, He went down to Capernaum for a only a few days , with his mother, borthers, disciples.

After that was the Jewish passover.. he went up to Jerusalem, drove merchants from thetemple, the priests asked what authority he was under to do such things.  And then Nicodemus came to him in th emiddle of the night.   But then, Jesus went to Judea to baptize and this is where it says taht jesus was baptizing more than John.  This was before John was arrested, it specifically saiys that.

so here is another hint about purification.. John is baptizing in water... a dispute about purification comes and the only part we hear of this dispute is that Jesus is baptizing more than John and John said He must increase and I must decrease.

In John 4 it is specific to say that when Jesus knew that the Pharisees knew Jesus was baptizing more than John... he left Juda and went AGAIN to galilee.
