Healings and Miracles

Whatever you have faith in, so shall it be.. amen.

Remember these things, keep them at the forefront of your mind:

Proverbs 23:7a King James Version (KJV)

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:

Luke 10:17-20 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

17 The Seventy[a] returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”

18 He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash. 19 Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you. 20 However, don’t rejoice that[b] the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Mark 16:15-18 New International Version (NIV)

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

John 14:10-21 New International Version (NIV)

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Acts 1:4-8 New International Version (NIV)

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with[a] water, but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Some see signs and never trust in HIS name... some do.  This is profound.

  • Jesus changed the water into wine,He displayed HIS glory, and HIS disciples believed in HIM (John 1:11)
  • When people saw the signs he was doing, they trusted in HIS name (John 1:23).
  • Nicodemus said:  No one can do the signs unless God were with him (John 3:2)
  • Jesus said that those who practice evil avoid the light so as not to be exposed, but those who live by truth come to the light "so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God".  GOD IN US!  (John 3:20-21)
  • John the baptist said "No one can receive a single things unless its given to him from heaven John 3:27
  • Like John the Baptist, We are sent ahead of Jesus.  In the flesh we might, with the help of the holy spirit, plant seeds... but Jesus is the bridegroom, it is HE through the holy spirit who receives the bride.  (John 3:27-30)
  • God loves to show HIS glory - We do what we see the father doing, in the same way.  The father loves us and shows us everything He is doing, and He will show us greater works so the world will be amazed.  Just as the Father raised the dead and gives life, so we also give life to anyone we want.  The father has given all judgement to the Son, so that all people will honor the Son.. (John 4:19-23)
  • The Model Prayer - Luke 11:1-4
“Whenever you pray, say: Father,[a] Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come.[b] 3 Give us each day our daily bread.[c] 4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone in debt to us.[d] And do not bring us into temptation.”[e]
  • Keep Asking, Searching, Knocking - Luke 11:1-4
8 I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s persistence,[h] he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9 “So I say to you, keep asking,[i] and it will be given to you. Keep searching,[j] and you will find. Keep knocking,[k] and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son[l] asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give[m] the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
  • The Parable of the Persistent Widow - 18:1-8
  • Fear God - Luke 12:4-7
don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. 5 But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw people into hell after death.
6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[c] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. 7 Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!
  • The Cure for Anxiety - Luke 11:22-34 - 31 “But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. 32 Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom.
  • The Parable of the Dishonest Manager - Luke 16:1-13
    • note: study this: this slave or servant (at the expense of his master) made arrangments with his master's debtors to pay less so that he would be in favor of those debtors and they would let him into their houses after he was kicked out. Jesus then said this:
      • The master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted astutely.
      • For the sons of this age are more astute than the sons of light in dealing with their own people.[
      • 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of the unrighteous money so that when it fails,[b] they may welcome you into eternal dwellings.
  • The Rich Man and Lazarus - Luke 16:19-31
the rich man has 5 brothers , just like Goliath. that is interesting. Abraham said they shoudl listen to moses and the prophets to avoid going to the place of torment and then continues to say "if they don't listen to moses and the prophets, then they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead"

Miracles of Provision

  • The Wedding in Cana -  John 2:1-12  - here Jesus did not speak to the water and say "become wine".  But in his being, he intended the water to be wine that is obvious from the context.
  • The Fourth Sign:  Feeding 5,000 it is amazing that the little boy allowed his only food to be taken and multiplied.  Do you think he knew who Jesus was and trusted in HIM? His father was likely there also.  Perhaps more people had food but were not willing to share.  Why did this little boy have food?  It seems the rest of the crowd intentionally came there to head off Jesus.  Based on all four gospels representation of this, they didn't seem to care where he was going and what his plans were, they just wanted to be with him to witness his miracles, or being on the receiving end of them.   Also notice, Andrew, not Peter, seems to be the only one who brought the boy to Jesus... he only showed a morsel of faith, because he specifically said "what are they for so many".  All the disciples did what Jesus asked..   they had the people sit down in groups, and the collected the left overs.   a word about Andrew. Andrew brought the boy to jesus, he brought Peter to Jesus, and communicated the Greeks' desire to meet Jesus.

  • Healings

      specific healings
      sick and/or near death

    • Healings at Capernaum the whole town brought him the sick and demon-possessed. He drove out many demons but did not permit them to speak because they knew him. (Luke says because they knew he was the Messiah)
      • details
        1. Peter's Mother in Law
          • How was this person healed:
Jesus went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. THE FEVER LEFT HER, and she begain to serve them. for something to leave, doesn't it mean something had to be present? like a spirit of illness or something.
  • Who's faith healed Peter's Mother in Law:
  • Jesus' faith.
    • The disciples faith: - in Verse 30, they entered Peter's house and they told Him about her immediately
    • Jesus' faith: vs 31 - after the disciples told him about her, he went to her and took her by the hand. and raised her up.
    • The mother in law's faith: - Jesus raised her up and she began to serve them

  • what caused the illness:
  • no indication
  • How long was it before she was healed:
  • the fever left her as soon as he took her by the hand and raised her up.
  • time and place
  • Mark 1:32-34
    • When: then... assumes this is after He called his disciples.    on the Sabbath.
    • Where:Capernaum, right away entered the Synagogue
    • When: then... on the Sabbath. -- right after being "thrown" out of Nazareth
    • Where:He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, In the synagogue
  • Luke 4:38-41
    • When:After He left the synagogue,
    • Where: Simon’s house.

    • Where: Capernaum, right away entered the Synagogue
  • A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed - Mark 5:20-43 - it cannot be mere coincidence that both of these had something to do with 12 years. The girl was 12 and the woman suffered from bleeding for 12 years. This section is about the woman suffering from an issue with blood for 12 years
    • How was she healed:
  • She thought in her head that if she touched his robe, that she would be healed. so she did and she was.
  • Who's faith healed her:
  • her faith - Jesus didn't do anything. And she is not even allowed to be out and around people. She had to push through many many people to even get to touching his robe. it is also possible that was weak because of the issue of blood and the doctors actually made her worse. I picture my mother here in chemo for her 4th bout with breast cancer. After chemo, it wore her down until she was thin and weak. She said to herself "if i can just touch his robes, i will be made well! Jesus said to her, your faith has made you well.
  • what caused the illness:
  • it doesn't say but Jesus does say go in peace and be free from your affliction.
  • How long was it before she was healed:
  • immediately when she touched him she felt in her body that she was cured. Jesus felt power leave his body so he knew someone was cured. Many were pressing around him, but he only felt it when this woman touched him.
  • A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed - Luke 8:40-56
    • When: When Jesus returned, (from across the sea, the region of the Gerasenes)
    • Where: on the shore of the sea apparently and then off to the Jairus' house
  • A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed - Matthew 9:18-26
    • When: As He was telling them these things,
    • Where:
  • The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son - John 4:46-54
    • Who's faith healed him: The official's faith and Jesus'
      • the official came to HIM and pleaded with HIM to COME heal his son who was about to die. - He believe Jesus needed to be in the physical presence of his son. if you compare this to the leader of the synagogue's daughter (Mark 5) who begged him to come put his hands on his daughter before she died, Jesus actually decided to go and put his hands on her. But he also told the synagogue ruler to only believe. Perhaps in that case, he knew in advance that the little girls was going to die and he felt he needed to be there to raise her from the dead. it must have been a good distance for him to travel because people met him along the way and told h im that his son became well at the same hour that Jesus said he would be well.
      • Jesus said "Your son will live" and the man believed what Jesus said, and so it was.
      • It is conspicuous to note that it says:  "Then he himself believed, along with his whole household".  Because it said he believed it when Jesus said it.  Also, it seems important to note that Jesus said (vs 48), "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.", And then, when his son was healed, he DID believe and then his whole household.    What is the difference between the belief he had when Jesus said his son would be well, and the belief he had when he saw his son well, and realized that the time was the same hour Jesus said the words. I don't believe that Jesus said "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe." in rudeness or frustration toward him. Jesus preached about what love really meant, and Paul expounded on it. To speak to someone in this rash tone is not an exhibition of love, or patience, but otherwise. So this is not the tone Jesus said it in. It is how we take it because we put it in our western mindset.
    • What caused the illness: unknown
    • How long was it before he was healed
      • The healing was within the same hour of Jesus saying this.

  • Healing a Daughter of Abraham - Luke 13:10-17 - on the sabbath Jesus healed a woman bent over for 18 years. (this is also being placed under casting out demons for obvious reasons)
    • How was she healed:
  • When Jesus saw her, He called out to her,[e] “Woman, you are free of your disability.” 13 Then He laid His hands on her, and instantly she was restored and began to glorify God.
  • Who's faith healed her:
  • Jesus' faith and compassion. based on the way it was stated, she didn't come to him for healing. However, the synagogue ruler did say: There are six days when work should be done; therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.” does his words indicate that she came to be healed?
  • what caused the illness:
  • Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox or donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it to water? 16 Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for 18 years—shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
  • How long was it before he was healed:
  • instantly
  • Other notes:
  • Jesus said this sickness was a Satan binding her. Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox or donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it to water? 16 Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for 18 years—shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
    the lame/paralyzed

  • The Third Sign: Healing the Sick (at the Pool of Bethesda or Bethsaida) - John 5:1-47   -
    • How was this person healed:
  • Jesus gave him a command for him to get up, pick up his mat and walk. and he did
  • Who's faith healed him:
  • Jesus' Faith but the man had to respond
    • Jesus apparently approached him, it didn't seem like he sought out Jesus
    • he believed he could be healed if he was the first one into the pool after the angel stirred up the water. He was not believing or even thinking of Jesus healing him
    • His first response when Jesus asked if he wanted to get well was an "excuse" per se:   "I don't have a man to put me into the pool"  and "while I'm coming, someone goes down ahead of me".   But Jesus told him to get up and walk.. and instantly he got well.
      • Why would Jesus ask him if he wanted to be get well? At no other time is it shown that Jesus approaches someone who is ill and asks them if they want to get well. Of course, at no other time are they at the Spring that is supposed to heal people, either.
        • Was it because he was beside the pool but didn't jump in?
        • Was it because he didn't think the man did anything to become healed
        • Was it because he should have realized that now is the time for salvation and healing and if he just believed, he would be healed himself
        • Was it because he didnt' recognize Jesus and ask him to heal him?
    • the man obviously had no faith in Jesus because had no idea who he was, so he must have felt his healing and decided to obey.. he did get up and walk.

  • what caused the illness:
  • unknown, but it does say he has been sick for 38 years.
    • the man was sick for 38 years
    • Jesus saw him again later and said "Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn't happen to you"

  • How long was it before he was healed
  • - instantly he got well.
  • Other things to note:
  • Is it possible that God told Jesus, or showed Jesus, that HE wanted to heal this man. Based on the text, it appears that there are many people at that pool. But it only speaks of him being healed. The author might have selectively spoken only of him because of how profound this healing is or because it fit with the message that the author was trying to get across.
    • Jesus said He is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he SEES the father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does these things in the same way. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works than these so that you will be amazed
    • I can do nothing on my own, I judge only as i hear, and my judgement is righteous, because i do not seek my own willl but the will of Him who sent me.

  • A Centurion’s Faith
    • Luke 7:1-10 When a centurion heard Jesus came to capernaum, he sent some Jewish elders to him requesting for Jesus to come and save the life of his slave. the Jewish elders said the centurion was worthy because "he loves our nation and has built a synagogue". Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tel him he wsn't worthy to have him come but just say the words and he knows he will be healed. And he was healed just like he believed. It didn't say this guy had repented from any of his sins or anything.. he just had a very good understanding of the authority Jesus had.
    • Matthew 8:5-13 - the servant was paralyzed
  • The Son of Man Forgives and Heals - Healing a Paralytic lying on a Mat
    • Mark 2:1-12
      • How was he healed:
  • Jesus sais "Son your sins are forgiven" and then indicated this was the same as saying: "I tell you: getup up, pick up your mat, and go home"
  • Who's faith:  the four men
  • ;
    • the man on the mat - he was a paralytic.  He couldn't do anything.  but if he didn't approve of being taken, he probably would have been at least yelling at them.  No mention is made of him disapproving the journey.  in fact, he is rarely mentioned at all.  However, when Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk, he did it.
    • the 4 men who carried him - their faith was so great that when they couldn't get through the door, they had to get on the roof and figure out where Jesus was under the roof and remove the roof above Jesus.  and then they had to lower the mat to Jesus.  It even said "Seeing their faith"...

  • what caused the illness:
  • It sounds like his paralysis was because of some sin. Jesus said "Son, your sins are forgiven".  Then he told the paralytic to get up, pick up your mat, and go home.
  • How long was it before healing:
  • verse 42 says - immediately the disease left him, and he was healed.
  • Luke 5:17-26- vs 17 - And the Lord’s power to heal was in Him
  • The Son of Man Forgives and Heals - Matthew 9:1-8
  • The Man with the Paralyzed Hand
    • Mark 3:1-6 -
      • How was he healed:
  • Jesus merely told him to stretch out his hand, and he did and it was restored.
  • Who's faith:
  • Jesus; and the man, he had to act on what jesus said.
    • the man with the paralyzed hand - it doesn't say he came to him, it says he was there. It seems he was purposely place there because they wanted to see if he would heal him. but that might be a little too much assumption. Jesus brought him up, so he came up of his own volition. and when Jesus told him to stretch out his hand, he did. So he did have to act on what Jesus said. If he had said that he couldn't stretch it out, then maybe he wouldn't have been saved.
    • the people around - unbelief possibly - he was angry and felt sorrow at the hardness of their hearts because they were so stern about the law of the sabbath and not about the mercy of doing good on the sabbath. But this did not hinder Jesus' ability to heal.

  • what caused the illness:
  • it doesn't say
  • How long was it before healing:
  • immediately - verse 5 says - he stretched it out and his hand was restored.
  • Luke 6:6-11
    • When: On another Sabbath (different than the one where he passed through the grainfields) He had obviously been in the habit of healing if they were testing him to see if he would heal on the sabbath.
    • Where: He entered the synagogue

    • When: Moving on from there
    • Where: He entered their synagogue

  • the blind

  • The Sixth Sign: Healing a Man Born Blind - John 9:1-10:21
    • How was this person healed:
  • 6 After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. 7 “Go,” He told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.
  • Who's faith healed him:
  • Jesus' Faith but the man had to respond
    • Jesus and his disciples were passing by on their way out of the temple complex. So this could have been still inside the temple complex or just outside or something like that. Regardless, this person did not come to Jesus seeking to be healed
    • However, he sat there and let Jesus spit on the ground, make mud, and put this spit and mud on his eyes. And when Jesus told him to go wash in the Pool of Siloam (means sent), he did it. and he came back seeing. So he still had to act on his faith. He had to have faith to let Jesus spit on his eyes. I believe that there is significance in him being sent to the Pool of Siloam. This pool apparently was located right outside the city gates. In vs 11 he also said to others when he was asked how he got his vision, He said "the man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me 'Go to Siloam and wash' and when i did i received my sight". So when he did what was asked, he received his sight. How did he see to get to the Pool? He was still blind, had mud on his eyes. He either knew the way or another led him.
    • After being healed, he was asked what he says about Jesus, he said "He is a prophet". The parents were called and they said they don't know who healed him, and said to ask him because he is of age. It specifically says that they knew that the Jews would ban them from the synagogue if they said he was the messiah. this makes it sound like the parents knew or believed he was the messiah but would not say so. When they called him back in, He indicated he was now Jesus' disciple because he asked if they wanted to become his disciple too.
    • Note: vs 30 - you don't know where He is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, he listens to him. .... If this person were not from God, He wouldn't be able to do anything... they ended up throwing him out
    • after this, Jesus asked him specifically, do you believe in the Son of Man and he responded "Who is He, Sir that i may believe in him. Jesus answered that He is Him. and he said "I believe, and worshipped him. So he didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah, or express that belief until then. The pharisees were within earshot, because they overhead this conversation.
    • a very important thing to note, when the Pharisees asked him if they are blind too, Jesus said "If you were blind, you wouldn't have sin, but now that you say we see, your sin remains." This indicates we are judged by what we know.  Jesus goes on to explain being the Door and the Good Shepherd.

  • what caused the illness:
  • nothing?
    • the man was born Blind
    • The disciples asked who's sin caused the blindness: the parents or this man. Jesus said neither have sinned, but this came about so that God's works might be displayed in him. - some people believe that God gave it to him, or God allowed it.

  • How long was it before he was healed

    • vs 6 - He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and dpread the mud on his eyes and told him to go wash in the pool of siloam (means sent). Which he did, and he came back seeing.
    • after he did what Jesus told him to do, he came back seeing.

  • Other things to note: we can do God's work during the "Day"
    • John 9:4 - We must do the works of Him who sent me while it is Day. Night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the World.

Spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 He looked up and said, “I see people—they look to me like trees walking.” 25 Again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and he saw distinctly.
  • Who's faith healed him:

24 He also said, “I assure you: No prophet is accepted in his hometown. 27 And in the prophet Elisha’s time, there were many in Israel who had serious skin diseases, yet not one of them was healed[r] —only Naaman the Syrian.”
    • Mark 6:1-6 - it says in verse 5, So he was not able to do any miracles there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He was amazed at their unbelief. Many this to mean that he COULDN'T heal them. that maybe it limited God. research this. God cannot be limited. but he is a gentlemen, he won't force healing. • Mark 3:13-19- He went up the mountain and summoned those he wanted. I would imagine he called them by name. They came to him. He ALSO appointed 12. So it seems like more than 12 came up. He named these 12 apostles (the sent ones) to be with Him, to send them to preach, and to have authority to drive out demons. My assumption here is that all twelve preached and drove out demons, including Judas.

    • Driving Out an Unclean Spirit
      • details
        • the unclean spirit was on someone in the synagogue.  In Mark, it actually said in the translation, "Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in the synagogue".   Need to check all versions, does it mean the man just entered the synagogue?
        • Jesus was teaching with authority, something that seemed to be new.
        • it is possible that this authority is what caused the unclean spirit to manifest
        • in both Mark and Luke, it says taht Jesus "rebuked him" and said "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  the exclamation point might have indicated yelling, or just a firm voice.  it didn't SAY he yelled or screamed.
        • in Mark, it says the spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out. In luke it says it threw him down before them and the deamon came ouf of him without huritng him at all.
        • Who's faith healed him:  obviously not the faith of the person who had the unclean spirit.  It doesn't mention much about that person... about why they had the unclean spirit or what happened after the unclean spirit was made to leave. What was this demon possessed person doing in the synagogue. Obviously the demons are not afraid of our churches. But they did seem to be afraid of the authority. or drawn by the authority. It does mention everywhere taht people can control the spirit, i assume that not only means the holy spirit but also the demon spirit.
        • what caused the illness: no indication
        • How long was it before he was healed (set free):In Mark it say "immediately.. it convulsed him, screamed and then came out" In Luke, it says it threw him down before them" all this indicates it happened right then and there.

  • A House Divided
    • Mark 3:20-30- Satan cannot drive out Satan. Very evident here: A house that is divided against itself cannot stand. The body of Christ is divided against itself.
      • no one can enter a strong man's house and rob his possessions without first binding the strong man, then he will rob his house
      • then it goes on to talk about blaspheming the holy spirit will not be forgiven, but all other sins will.
      • I find it very odd here that it says that his house was so crowded that they weren't even able to eat.  But his family set out to "RESTRAIN HIM" and said "He's out of His mind".  if this is as i take it, none of them believed in him either.  and based on the next section where it talks about mother and brother and sisters, i am guessing his own mother who had the Angel Gabriel come to her and saw all the wonderful things of his birth and his childhood.... she also had this unbelief.
      • in the book of luke, it goes on to talke about his mother and brothers coming and the crowd telling Him that his family was looking for him. And he said who is my mother and brothers.

      • in the book of luke, it goes on to talk about an unclean spirit leaving and then returning to its house with 7 demons more evil than itself. then the next vers talkes of true blessedness (a woman said that any woman who breastfed him was blessed, but Jesus said that anyone who heard the word of God was blessed" this goes along with the other two books speaking of his family coming to look for him, and then spoke of the sign of jonah
  • Demons Driven Out by the Master - Mark 5:1-20 - Matthew 8:28-34 - Luke 8:26-39
    • First, it seems obvious that Jesus came here just to set this man free, knowing this man's testimony would be told all throughout the area. I say this because he told the disciples, let's go to the other side, and they went there and as soon as this man was set free, they went back. Also, on their way there, an evil storm seemed to try to stop them from going to the other side, almost as if the spiritual world knew what he was going to do.
    • the text says, as soon as he got out of the boat, the man with the demons met him. He came out of the tombs where he lived and met him. But he was so scary and strong that no one was able to restrain him, not even with chains and shackles. But he had enough control over himself to run to Jesus and kneel down before him. But the demons inside spoke, it seems as if they spoke only after he told them to come out. The demons knew who he was and begged him not to torment them. He also kept begging Jesus not to send them out of the region. But then asked him to send them into the 2000 pigs
    • who's faith: well, the man came to him and the demon's knew who he was. He merely had to say "come out of him". The demons had to listen so they begged him. So i would say both Jesus' faith and the man's.
    • what caused the demon possession - there is only one hint. Jesus tell the man to go back to his people and tell them how the Lord has had mercy on him. So it seems there was a fault in him somewhere.
    • how long was it before he was healed - when Jesus spoke the word for them to come out, they began to talk to him and beg him to not torture them and send them out of the region.. he spoke with mercy and grace even to them and allowed them to go into the pigs. Is it coincidental that they are pigs, one of the meats that jewish people are vehement about not eating.. pork. Regardless, by the time the people of the towns came to see what happened, the man that was demon possessed was dressed and in his right mind.

; Jesus' faith.  He knew what was going to happen beforehand, the below statements do not seem to be real statements of faith. it seems everyone around was in unbelief. Even the disciples before this seemed to not have faith because Jesus had to explain everything to them.
    • Jesus' faith: vs 41 - Jesus thanked God for hearing him.. so at some point before this Jesus was talking to God. After that, Jesus said "Lazarus, come out".
    • Martha's faith:
      • in Verse 21, Martha said in faith, if you had been here my brother wouldn't have died. Also, even know I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you. But she wasn't thinking he was going to resurrect him now because when Jesus said Lazarus will rise again, she was thinking he was talking about THE resurrection in the future... on the last day. Jesus explained that anyone, even if they died, will live. And then she said something profound when he asks if she believes this, so they must be tied together in knowledge that should have been gained... she said "I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world"
      • in verse 39, after he asked them to remove the stone,Martha said he has been decaying 4 days.  Jesus had to remind her that if she believes she would see the glory of God.
    • Mary's faith:
      • in verse 32, Mary cried telling him that if he were there, Lazarus wouldn't have died.  the Jews who were with her were crying also. He was angry in his spirit and deeply moved.
      • (Some say he was angry at the Jews and Mary for not believing, some say he was angry because death and sickness exists); After he wept and the jews said "See how he loved him" and some said "Couldn't he have kept this man from dying since he opened the blind man's eyes".. he was angry in Himself again. - is this phrase angry in himself kind of like annoyed. i want to look up that word.
    • the Jews' faith
      • in verse 36, the Jews said "couldn't he who opened the blind man's eyes have kept this man from dying"
      • in verse 45, it says that many of the Jews wo came to Mary and saw what He did believed in Him. they believed in Him AFTER Lazarus was raised from the dead

  • A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed - Mark 5:20-43 - it cannot be mere coincidence that both of these had something to do with 12 years. The girl was 12 and the woman suffered from bleeding for 12 years. This section is about The synagogue leader's daughter who was sick and died, she was 12.
    • How was this person healed:
  • Jesus said from a distance "your son will live"
  • Who's faith healed her:

    • the synagogue leader: he came to the sea knowing the Jesus was going to be there. He fell at Jesus' feet and kept begging Him. He believed that if Jesus would come to his house and lay his hands on her, she would get well and live. But he didn't indicate that he had faith that Jesus would raise her from the dead or that he could just say a word from a distance. Also, since he begged and kept begging, it did not seem like he felt Jesus would heal her unless he begged. if you compare this to the Royal official whose son will ill at Capernaum (John 4). He, too, had pleaded with Jesus to come down and heal his son who was about to die. Jesus actually spoke a bit in anger about their unbelief, if we understand it correctly. In that case, Jesus just told him that his son was not going to die, and he did get well. it must have been a good distance for him to travel because people met him along the way and told h im that his son became well at the same hour that Jesus said he would be well. However, synagogue's leader's daughter who begged him to come put his hands on his daughter before she died, Jesus actually decided to go and put his hands on her. But he also told the synagogue ruler to only believe. Perhaps in that case, he knew in advance that the little girls was going to die and he felt he needed to be there to raise her from the dead
    • Jesus' faith:
      • Jesus knew all he had to do is stand where he was and say the words, but he chose to go with him.
      • additionally, Jesus didn't seem to be rushed to get to her. He wsn't worried. people were crowding him. In fact, he made sure he took the time to talk to the woman who touched him and was healed of her blood issue. I am sure that the synagogue leader was worried that they wouldn't make it because he said his daughter was at death's door and he begged and kept begging.
      • When Jesus overhead the people who came to tell this leader that his daughter died, Jesus told him "Don't be afraid. Only believe."
        • Now when my family member dies, i hardly think i will be afraid. I will probably be saddened beyond repair at the time, at least before i knew Jesus. So maybe afraid is not the correct word. FEAR is the opposite of faith, so perhaps he actually meant have faith.. don't disbelieve. other possible meanings other than simply being afraid

        • He also would not let anyone accompany him except Peter, James, and John.
        • When he got there, He told the people that she was not dead but sleeping. this is the same things he said when lazarus, he told the dicsiples he was sleeping and laughed at him. He put them all outside except the disciples who came with him, and the child's father and mother.
      • Jesus merely said Get up!
    • the people's faith: - actually they had unbelief.
      • while he was speaking to the woman about her issue of blood being healed, people came to the synagogue leader and told him that his daughter had died and not to bother the teacher anymore.
      • When leaving, he only let his 3 main disciples come
      • at the leader's house, people were weeping and wailing loudly. He went in and told them she was just sleeping and they laughed at him. He put them all outside and only entered the room with the 3 disciples and the parents of the girl

  • A Widow’s Son Raised to Life - Luke 7:11-17 - Jesus was approaching the city of Nain and at the gate a dead man was being carried out. It was a widow's only son and Jesus had compassion on her. He came up, touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. He said "Young man, i tell you, get up!" and the dead man sat up and began to speak.

      • strong's #4102 greek, - Thayer's definition - faith means conviction of the truth, belief; conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervour both of faith and joined with it God as the creator and ruler of all things, provider and bestower of salvation, and Chist of the Messiah throuogh whome we are saved.
      • - Mark 4:35-41 - fierce windstorm arose but he was sleeping in the stern on a cushion. If you were in a small boat in a horrible storm, would you sleep soundly? that is true peace. the disciples had no faith, "Teacher! Don't you care that we're going to die? " all he did was get up, and say to the sea "Silence! Be still!" rebuking the wind .. and the wind ceased and there was a calm. "Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith".

    • The Fifth Sign: Walking on the Water Not only did Jesus walk on the water, but he also excelerated time. There was about 3 miles left to get to the shore, but the text says "at once the boat was at the shore". Mark adds that Jesus could see them a few miles from short being beaten by the wind, and miraculously he caught up to them and was going to pass them. It is also said that the disciples were completely astounded, because they didn't understand about the loaves, their hearts were hardened.

    • The Barren Fig Tree Is Cursed - Mark 11:12-14,20-26, Matthew 21:18-22 - after the triumphal entry, just before the passover... The next day when they came out from Bethany. They saw a fig tree with leaves in the distance a fig tree, but when they came to it they saw it had no fruit. He seemed to expect there to be fruit but it says it was not the season for figs. Regardless he merely said “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” and he went on the to the temple complex and later that evening went back out of town. But the next morning on the way back into Jerusalem, they notices taht the fig tree was withered. Jesus replied:
“Have faith in God. 23 I assure you: If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, all the things you pray and ask for—believe that you have received[a] them, and you will have them.
but he continues this discussion with a topic of forgivness
25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing. [26 But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongdoing.]”[b][c]
    • The Journey to Jerusalem - Luke 9:51-55 - When it was about the time for him to go to His father, he determined to go to Jerusalem. He sent messeners ahead. On their way they entered a village in the Samaritans to make preparations for Him. But they wouldn't welcome him because he was determine to go to Jerusalem. When James and John (the Sons of Thunder) saw this they asked Jesus if he wanted them to call fire from heaven to consume them. But Jesus rebuked them.
      • what does it mean they wouldn't welcome him becuase he intended to go to Jerusalem.
      • Obviously James and John knew that they could call fire down from heaven. Why did they feel this was appropriate? is that who they thought God was? a God of wrath? Is there another incident in the bible where God did this?
    • The Judas Kiss - Matthew 26:36-46 - 53 Or do you think that I cannot call on My Father, and He will provide Me at once with more than 12 legions[s] of angels?

      • Luke 8:19-21
    • The Parable of the Sower - Mark 4:1-20
      • Jesus talks of the seed that was sown. Someone is the body being used to throw the seed to the ground
      • When he refers to the seed that feel on good ground, how did the ground become good ground. If i just walk outside and throw seed on the ground, i will be lucky if any of it falls on good soil. Truly, before the seed can take root, the ground had to be tilled, or dug up, or something. Then the rock, the hard ground, or whatever is cleared out of the way before the seed can take root.
      • When we plant, germination is also part of that process. After studying this process, i see that water activates the enzymes that begin the process of seed growth.
        • links for research
        • In order for the seed to crack open, it must first be in darkness? when it cracks, then the embryo seeks the light
        • When the seed breaks through, first a root comes out and goes into the ground. then the embryo also grows upward looking for light. it breaks throught he ground an looks like a shepherds' staff. Isn't that wonderful!
        • Finally, it grows towards the light.. the light gives it life .. it starts the process of photosynthesis. The light is its total source, and water, and oxygen. (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)
        • some seed, like grain, have to have the outer coat removed before planting. This process is called threshing. With grain, friction is what causes this to happen. they rub the head of grain between their fingers, or take bults of grain stalks and step on them or beat them with a stick. additionally, they winnow the grain heads to get the rest of the chaff (the unused part, the trash) away from the good part of the seed. Winnowing involves letting the wind automatically separate the chaff from the seed, The seed is heavier, and the normal process of gravity causes it to fall faster. It will fall directly below where it is being thrown up or poured out. When the wind blows on it, the wind pushes the chaff, which is lighter, further away. The chaff will end up in one pile and the seed will end up in another.
      • in Summary, the ground is often hard and has to be tilled (torn up). Water, Light, Wind all play a part in the growth of this seed. This all speaks the preparation of the Heart that God gives. He provides it all. Jesus often said, No one can come to me unless the Father has brought him. No one will understand the parables unless the Father has opened his eyes so he might see. We will all be taught by God.
    • The Parable of the Growing Seed Mark 4:26-29
      • Jesus talks about a lamp not being hidden but put on a lampstand. Then goes on to indicate that everything is intended to be revealed, not hidden. Finally, he said "Pay attention to what you hread. by the measure you use, it will be measured and added to you. For the one who has, it will be given, and from the one who doesn't have, even what he has will be taken away"
    • The Parable of the Mustard Seed - Mark 4:30-32
      • Jesus is purposely trying to explain the kingdom of God. He says it is like a mustard seed that, when sown into the soil, is smaller than all seeds but grows taller thann all vegetabes, and produces large branches so that the birds of the sky can nest it its shade
      • many looked at the symbolism of birds here, because birds are often represented as evil spirits, or satan. i have heard it said that birds living in the trees is that eveil is inside the church. Not my words, but others.
    • Using Parables - Mark 4:33-34
      • Juesus spoke to the people in parables, as they wre able to understand. Privately, he would explain everything to his disciples - in turn, i believe even now, the Holy spirit speaks to us in private
    • Rejection at Nazareth - Luke 4:28-30 - Jesus defied physical laws
28 When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged. 29 They got up, drove Him out of town, and brought Him to the edge[s] of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl Him over the cliff. 30 But He passed right through the crowd and went on His way.

    • In Praise of John the Baptist - Luke 7:18-30 - vs 28-30 - 28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John,[k] but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 (And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God’s way of righteousness,[l] because they had been baptized with John’s baptism. 30 But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.)
    • Much Forgiveness, Much Love - Luke 7:36-50 - At a pharisee's (simon) house, reclining for dinner a sinful woman poured fragrant oil on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair and kissed his feed. He told her "Your sins are forgiven", then shortly after says "your faith has saved you, go in peace"
