The Spoken Word

Proverbs 14

New International Version (NIV)

A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
but the lips of the wise protect them.

Proverbs 15

New International Version (NIV)

A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge,
but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.

The soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.

23 A person finds joy in giving an apt reply
and how good is a timely word!

28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers,
but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.

Matthew 15:18-20Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.20 These are the things that defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
